A Closer Look at AI: New Ways to Align Portfolios With Client Values

A Closer Look at AI: New Ways to Align Portfolios With Client Values

From creative ownership to energy demand and worker protections, AI raises a range of questions for investors. At Ethic, we recognize that each client brings their own perspectives to these questions. With our new suite of AI-related screens, clients will have even more flexibility to express their values.

We've also made some upgrades to the way the Ethic team builds investment screens, broadening our industry- and geography-specific screening capabilities and supporting more complex screening logic

Looking across the AI industry

Our new screens address several areas:

  • Governance and labor: AI model companies that don’t follow best practices for AI safety governance, as well as companies that provide gig labor for training AI models but lack strong worker protections.
  • Infrastructure: Companies operating data centers at the largest scale, a more targeted screen for high-emissions data center operators, and screens for semiconductor producers.
  • Model development: Companies developing AI models, with specific screens for image and video generation, speech and audio generation, code generation, facial recognition, and large language models.

Our screens distinguish between activities such as generating images and recognizing them, or identifying people in a database and unlocking a phone - helping our clients address their concerns with greater precision. Some AI screens capture many large companies in common benchmarks; others target a narrower activity or concern. The screens are now live and available for our clients on a by-request basis.

Powering up our screening technology

Alongside these additions, we’ve upgraded the technology behind our Sustainability Model to support geography and industry-relative comparisons, as well as more complex screening criteria and exceptions. These capabilities will enable upcoming screens for issue areas including workforce representation relative to geography and CEO pay ratios relative to industry, among others.
